What is the purpose of a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

This evaluation is a diagnostic tool to better understand the individual’s strengths and needs, to assist with assessment of learning problems and learning disability, to assessing neurological disorders (e.g., dementia, Parkinson’s disease, normal pressure hydrocephalus), to determine differential diagnoses (e.g., mood disorder versus neurodegenerative disease), and to evaluate disorders affecting individuals across their lifespan, such as developmental delays and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

Neuropsychological evaluations typically include standardized pencil-and-paper tests, computer-based tests, clinical interview, and various rating scales and questionnaires. These procedures help the clinician to better understand the individual’s cognitive functioning, executive functioning, attention/working memory, information processing and processing speed, language, mood, and behavior.

How do I prepare for a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

Testing can take up to eight hours to complete and may be completed over multiple days depending upon the client and assessments; an estimation of time needed will be provided prior to the testing date(s). Clients are encouraged to bring snacks or small meals that will not be distracting while completing a task. Clients are strongly encouraged to get a solid night of sleep prior to testing, and to engage in a normal morning routine (e.g., if you drink coffee or take prescribed medication, do not skip it for testing unless otherwise directed by a physician). Please understand that not every question will be answered correctly and not all tests will be completed within the given time limit. The goal is to gauge a clear and accurate baseline of the individual’s current level of functioning. These tests can also be repeated over time if necessary to continue monitoring an individual’s prognosis.

What happens after the evaluation is completed?

After the evaluation is completed, the evaluator will analyze the results carefully, review background information and records, and consider the individual’s strengths, weakness, diagnostic impressions, and recommendations for treatment and/or educational planning. This often includes recommendations (interventions, strategies, supports) appropriate for the individual across settings, including school, workplace, family, and community. A complimentary feedback conference is provided to discuss and clarify the results and recommendations.

What is the cost of a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

The fee for a neuropsychological evaluation depends upon the purpose/goals of the evaluation and reasons for referral which will dictate the procedures administered and clinician’s time needed to administer, score, analyze, and interpret the procedures, as well as report writing, and additional consultations. We do have predetermined fee schedules for most evaluation referrals. Since people have different insurance companies, we cannot determine whether you may receive reimbursement for the evaluation. You are encouraged, therefore, to contact your own carrier to clarify the nature of your coverage. This can be discussed further with our staff.

How do I arrange Neuropsychological Evaluations?

Schedule an appointment with the receptionist (732-873-1212). The duration of the evaluation will vary depending upon the number and type of procedures. Most evaluations can be completed within two days.
