What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how individuals communicate, interact socially, and process sensory information. Approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States is diagnosed with ASD. While ASD is most often identified in early childhood, it is a lifelong condition that affects each individual differently. ASD is characterized by differences in social communication, repetitive behaviors, and patterns of interest or activity. Individuals with ASD may require varying levels of support in daily life.

Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder

While ASD presents differently from person to person, common symptoms may include:

  • Social Communication Challenges: Difficulty understanding social cues, maintaining eye contact, or engaging in conversation.
  • Repetitive Behaviors: Engaging in repetitive movements or routines and experiencing distress when those routines are disrupted.
  • Sensory Sensitivities: Reactivity to sensory stimuli such as lights, sounds, textures, or smells.
  • Intense Focus on Interests: Developing deep, specialized interests in specific topics or activities.
  • Language Differences: Delayed language development, difficulty understanding verbal and nonverbal communication, or reliance on alternative communication methods.

Although ASD can present challenges, early intervention and tailored support can help individuals develop essential skills and thrive in their daily lives.
