What Is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by recurring, unwanted thoughts or fears called obsessions and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals called compulsions that are performed to reduce anxiety. Even when individuals attempt to resist these thoughts or behaviors, the cycle often continues.

Common themes of OCD may include concerns related to contamination, safety, or harm. Symptoms can interfere with daily routines,  relationships, and overall quality of life and often develop gradually, worsening during periods of stress or change.

Symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder involves obsessions, compulsions, or both, which can cause significant distress and interfere with daily functioning.

Obsessions may include:

  • Persistent, unwanted thoughts, urges, or mental images
  • Fears related to contamination, harm, safety, or uncertainty
  • Intrusive or distressing thoughts that are difficult to control

Compulsions may include:

  • Repetitive behaviors such as excessive washing, cleaning, or checking
  • Mental rituals like counting, repeating words, or reviewing actions
  • Feeling driven to perform behaviors to reduce anxiety or prevent a feared outcome

While compulsive behaviors may provide temporary relief, they often become time-consuming and disruptive. When symptoms interfere with functioning, professional evaluation and support are recommended.

OCD Treatments for Children and Adolescents

The most effective treatment for children and adolescents with OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a specialized form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). ERP helps young individuals gradually face feared thoughts or situations while learning to resist compulsive behaviors, reducing anxiety, and building coping skills over time.

In some cases, medication may also be considered alongside therapy as part of a coordinated treatment plan.

Additional approaches may include:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Mindfulness-based strategies
  • Skills to support coping and daily functioning

At Behavior Therapy Associates, clinicians provide evidence-based OCD treatment tailored to each child’s needs, with support for families and coordination with schools when appropriate.

OCD Treatments for Adults

Evidence-based treatment for adults with OCD typically includes Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and may be combined with medication under the care of an experienced medical specialist to support symptom reduction and long-term improvement.

Additional approaches may include:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Mindfulness-based strategies
  • Skills to support coping and daily functioning

At Behavior Therapy Associates, clinicians apply these approaches in a personalized and collaborative manner to support adults in managing OCD symptoms and improving quality of life.

Support for Individuals With OCD

Supporting individuals with OCD often includes addressing emotional regulation, self-compassion, and responses to distressing thoughts. Approaches that foster mindfulness and a more compassionate relationship with internal experiences can help reduce self-criticism and emotional distress and are commonly used alongside evidence-based OCD treatment.

At Behavior Therapy Associates, clinicians integrate these supportive strategies into individualized care to promote overall functioning and well-being.
