Autism Spectrum Disorder Evaluations

Comprehensive Autism Evaluations for Children, Adolescents, and Adults

If you are concerned about your child’s social communication, behavior, or developmental progress, or if you are an adolescent or adult seeking clarity about longstanding social, sensory, or executive functioning differences, a comprehensive Autism Spectrum Disorder evaluation may provide meaningful direction.

Behavior Therapy Associates in Somerset, New Jersey, provides thorough autism evaluations across the lifespan. Our assessments determine whether diagnostic criteria for ASD are met, clarify developmental and functional patterns, and guide individualized recommendations for treatment, school, college, or workplace support.

Autism may be identified in early childhood, and early evaluation supports timely access to services. At the same time, many adolescents and adults pursue autism testing later in life to better understand social communication differences, sensory sensitivities, or executive functioning challenges that were not previously recognized. A comprehensive evaluation at any age can improve access to appropriate supports and accommodations.

When to Consider an Autism Evaluation

Families may consider autism testing for a child or adolescent when there are persistent differences in social communication, restricted or repetitive behaviors, strong reliance on routines, sensory sensitivities, or difficulty with peer relationships.

Adolescents and adults may pursue an evaluation if they experience lifelong social communication differences, challenges navigating relationships or workplace expectations, sensory overwhelm, executive functioning concerns, or a longstanding sense of feeling different without a clear explanation.

Because autism presents differently across individuals, a structured and comprehensive evaluation helps determine whether observed patterns are consistent with Autism Spectrum Disorder or another condition.

Purpose of an Autism Spectrum Evaluation

A comprehensive autism evaluation helps to:

  • Clarify whether the criteria for ASD are met
  • Identify cognitive, academic, emotional, and adaptive strengths and challenges
  • Determine eligibility for early intervention, special education, college, or workplace accommodations
  • Guide treatment planning and individualized support

Accurate diagnosis allows individuals and families to access appropriate services, educational supports, therapeutic interventions, and workplace accommodations.

What an Autism Evaluation Includes

Autism evaluations at Behavior Therapy Associates are individualized and comprehensive. Depending on age and referral concerns, the process may include a detailed developmental and psychosocial history, clinical interviews, structured observation, standardized cognitive and social communication testing, behavioral and adaptive functioning measures, executive functioning assessment when relevant, and review of prior educational or medical records.

One component that may be included is the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule Second Edition, or ADOS-2. The ADOS-2 is a structured observational assessment used to evaluate communication, social interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviors. It is widely regarded as a gold standard component of autism assessment and is administered by trained professionals. The ADOS-2 is only one part of a full diagnostic evaluation, and conclusions are based on the integration of multiple data sources and clinical expertise.

After the Evaluation

Following completion of testing, individuals and families receive a comprehensive written report outlining findings, diagnostic impressions when appropriate, and individualized recommendations. Recommendations may include school-based supports, college disability documentation, workplace accommodations, behavioral planning, therapy referrals, executive functioning support, or follow-up evaluations as needed.

A feedback session is provided to review results, answer questions, and discuss next steps in detail.
