Acceptance and Commitment Therapy / Training (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is considered a third-wave behavioral therapy that expands the focus of treatment beyond symptom reduction. Rather than aiming to eliminate difficult thoughts or feelings, ACT emphasizes increasing psychological flexibility and supporting individuals in living in ways that align with what they value most.
ACT incorporates acceptance and mindfulness-based strategies alongside behavioral change techniques. Individuals learn to notice thoughts and emotions without becoming overwhelmed or driven by them, while also developing skills to take meaningful action despite discomfort.
A central component of ACT is values-based living. Treatment focuses on helping individuals clarify what matters to them and commit to actions that move them toward those values, even in the presence of stress, anxiety, or uncertainty. This approach emphasizes empowerment, self-awareness, and intentional decision-making.
ACT is an empirically supported intervention and is used with individuals across a wide range of ages and concerns. It places strong emphasis on skill development, acceptance of internal experiences, and committed action in pursuit of a meaningful life.
At Behavior Therapy Associates, ACT is integrated into a compassionate, person-centered approach that honors each individual’s values, experiences, and goals. Clinicians support psychological flexibility while fostering self-compassion, resilience, and meaningful engagement in daily life, tailoring treatment to the unique needs of each person across the lifespan.
