What is Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a leading evidence-based form of therapy used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, and related conditions. At Behavior Therapy Associates, ERP therapy is delivered by specialized clinicians who work collaboratively with each client to build meaningful, lasting progress.

ERP therapy is a structured form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) that helps individuals gradually face the thoughts, situations, images or triggers that cause distress while learning to resist the compulsive behaviors and avoidance patterns that typically follow.

How ERP Therapy Work?

ERP therapy targets the cycle at the core of OCD and anxiety. When feared situations arise, many individuals rely on compulsions, rituals, or avoidance to temporarily reduce distress. While these strategies provide short-term relief, they reinforce fear over time and make anxiety harder to manage.

ERP interrupts this cycle through two core components:

  1. Exposure: Gradually and systematically confronting the thoughts, situations, or experiences that trigger anxiety or obsessive fears. Exposures are structured collaboratively and progress at a pace suited to each individual.
  2. Response Prevention: Learning to resist or reduce the compulsive behaviors, rituals, or reassurance-seeking that typically follow anxiety triggers, allowing the brain to learn that feared outcomes are often less likely than expected.

Through repeated practice, individuals build tolerance for uncertainty and distress, reducing the hold that OCD and anxiety have on their daily lives.

Conditions Commonly Treated with ERP Therapy

ERP therapy is most widely recognized as the gold-standard treatment for OCD, and it is also effective for a range of anxiety-based conditions:

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Includes intrusive thoughts, compulsive checking, contamination fears, and reassurance-seeking behaviors.
  • Anxiety disorders: Includes generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and panic-related concerns
  • Specific phobias: Includes fears of illness, harm, or specific objects or situations
  • Avoidance-based behaviors: patterns of avoiding people, places, or activities due to fear or discomfort

If you or someone you love experiences behaviors or thoughts that interfere with daily functioning, ERP therapy may be an effective treatment option.

Our ERP Therapy Approach at Behavior Therapy Associates

At Behavior Therapy Associates, ERP treatment is individualized. Clinicians tailor therapy to each client’s symptoms, goals, developmental level, and daily functioning.

Typical treatments include:

  • Psychoeducation about OCD, anxiety, and the role of avoidance and compulsions in maintaining symptoms
  • Gradual exposure exercises developed collaboratively with the clinician, progressing at a pace that is challenging yet manageable
  • Response prevention strategies to help clients tolerate discomfort and build lasting confidence
  • Ongoing support and structure from a trained clinician throughout each stage of treatment

Clinicians at Behavior Therapy Associates use evidence-based behavioral and cognitive approaches within a supportive, and collaborative environment.
