EVALUATIONS
Neuropsychological Evaluations
A Comprehensive Neuropsychological Evaluation at Behavior Therapy Associates
Neuropsychological evaluations are specialized assessments designed to understand how brain functioning impacts cognitive ability, learning, memory, attention, processing, socialization, behavior, and emotional regulation. At Behavior Therapy Associates in Somerset, New Jersey, these evaluations provide an in-depth analysis of strengths and weaknesses across the lifespan.
A neuropsychological evaluation may be helpful when there are concerns about learning differences, attention and executive functioning challenges, memory changes, developmental delays, or possible neurological conditions. These assessments are often recommended to clarify complex diagnostic questions, differentiate between psychiatric and neurological conditions, and guide informed treatment, educational, or medical decision-making.
What Is Included in a Neuropsychological Evaluation at BTA
Each evaluation at Behavior Therapy Associates is individualized based on the referral concern. The process typically includes a clinical interview, review of developmental and medical history, standardized cognitive and academic testing, and carefully selected measures that assess areas such as emotional, behavioral, social, attention, executive functioning, memory, processing speed, language, and emotional functioning.
Testing may involve both traditional paper-based assessments and computer-administered tasks. Depending on the scope of the evaluation, sessions may be completed in one or multiple days. The clinician also interviews other pertinent individuals, including family members or significant others, private professionals, school personnel, etc.
After the Evaluation
Once testing is complete, the clinician conducts a thorough analysis of the findings and prepares a comprehensive written report. This report outlines strengths and weaknesses, diagnostic impressions when appropriate, and individualized recommendations. Recommendations may address specific strategies, programming, accommodations, workplace supports, therapeutic interventions, medical follow-up, and long-term planning.
A feedback conference is scheduled to review results, answer questions, and ensure clarity regarding next steps.
Preparing for Testing
To support optimal performance, individuals are encouraged to maintain adequate sleep prior to testing, follow their usual daily routine unless otherwise directed, and bring snacks if testing sessions are extended. The purpose of a neuropsychological evaluation is not to achieve a perfect score, but to obtain an accurate and objective understanding of current functioning.
