Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is considered a second-generation behavioral therapy and emphasizes the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. CBT is based on the understanding that unhelpful or inaccurate patterns of thinking can contribute to emotional distress and influence behavior in ways that maintain or intensify difficulties.

Thoughts such as self-criticism, rigid beliefs, or negative expectations may contribute to emotions such as anxiety, depression, anger, or guilt. These emotions can then lead to behavioral responses that reinforce distress, creating a self-perpetuating cycle. CBT focuses on identifying these patterns and helping individuals develop more balanced, adaptive ways of thinking and responding.

CBT is an active, skill-based approach. Individuals work collaboratively with their clinician to recognize patterns, test assumptions, and practice new strategies both in and outside of sessions. Over time, these skills can support improved emotional regulation, problem-solving, and coping.

CBT is an empirically supported intervention with a strong body of research demonstrating its effectiveness with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families across a wide range of presenting concerns.

At Behavior Therapy Associates, CBT is delivered with a strong emphasis on collaboration, compassion, and individualized care. Clinicians work closely with each person to understand their experiences within the context of their life, relationships, and environment, tailoring evidence-based strategies to support meaningful, sustainable change across the lifespan.
