What are Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders?

Tourette Syndrome and other tic disorders involve repetitive motor movements and/or vocalizations that occur involuntarily or with limited control and often fluctuate over time, particularly during periods of stress, excitement, fatigue, or changes in routine.

Tics may include sudden motor movements such as eye blinking, facial movements, shoulder shrugging, or head jerking, as well as vocal tics such as throat clearing, sniffing, repeating sounds, or repeating words or phrases. Some individuals experience brief urges or sensations before a tic occurs and may feel temporary relief after the tic is completed.

Tic disorders can vary in frequency and intensity over time and may affect children, adolescents, and adults differently. Understanding symptoms early can help support emotional well-being, school functioning, confidence, and daily life.

Symptoms of Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders

Symptoms can vary widely across individuals and may change over time. Tourette syndrome and tic disorders are characterized by sudden, repeated movements or sounds that can be difficult to suppress.

Common motor tics may include:

  • Eye blinking
  • Facial grimacing
  • Shoulder shrugging
  • Head or neck movements
  • Hand or body movements

Common vocal tics may include:

  • Throat clearing
  • Sniffing
  • Coughing sounds
  • Repeating sounds, words, or phrases

Tics often increase during periods of stress, anxiety, excitement, or fatigue and may temporarily decrease during focused activities. When symptoms begin affecting daily functioning, emotional well being, school performance, or relationships, a clinical evaluation may help clarify diagnosis and guide treatment recommendations.

Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorder Treatment for Children and Adolescents

Children and adolescents with tic disorders often benefit from structured, developmentally appropriate support that addresses both symptoms and emotional functioning. Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is an evidence-based treatment commonly used to help individuals better understand and manage tic symptoms. Habit Reversal Training (HRT) is one component of CBIT and focuses on increasing awareness of urges and developing behavioral strategies to help manage tics.

Behavioral approaches can help young individuals:

  • Increase awareness of urges and triggers
  • Develop strategies to manage tics
  • Improve coping skills and emotional regulation
  • Reduce the impact of symptoms on school, friendships, and confidence

At Behavior Therapy Associates, clinicians work collaboratively with children, adolescents, and families to support long-term functioning across home, school, and social settings. When appropriate, collaboration with parents, teachers, and schools can help ensure consistency and support across environments.

Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorder Treatment for Adults

Tics can continue into adulthood and may affect work performance, stress management, relationships, organization, and daily routines.

Adults may benefit from treatment approaches such as Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT), which focuses on helping individuals better understand symptom patterns, increase awareness of urges, and develop practical behavioral strategies to manage tics more effectively.

Adults may also benefit from therapy focused on:

  • Understanding symptom patterns and triggers
  • Strengthening emotional regulation skills
  • Managing stress and anxiety
  • Developing practical coping strategies for daily functioning

At Behavior Therapy Associates, clinicians provide individualized, evidence-based care tailored to each adult’s goals, responsibilities, and lifestyle needs.

Managing Tourette Syndrome and Tics

Managing tic disorders often involves building awareness of triggers, understanding how different emotional states may impact symptoms, and learning practical strategies to reduce the emotional and functional impact of tics over time.

Because symptoms may fluctuate, consistent and flexible support can be important during transitions, periods of heightened emotions, or increased academic or work demands.

At Behavior Therapy Associates, clinicians collaborate with individuals and families to support emotional regulation, coping skills, and long-term functioning across home, school, work, and social environments.
