What is Depression?
Depression, also known as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), is a common but serious mental health condition that affects how individuals feel and function in daily life. It can cause persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyed activities. Depression affects over 280 million people across all age groups.
While everyone experiences occasional sadness, clinical depression involves more intense symptoms that last for at least two weeks and interfere with one’s ability to work, sleep, eat, and enjoy life.
Symptoms of Depression
Symptoms of depression vary from person to person, but most often include:
- Emotional Symptoms: Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, worthlessness, or excessive guilt.
- Cognitive Symptoms: Difficulty concentrating, indecisiveness, trouble remembering details, or recurring thoughts of death or suicide.
- Physical Symptoms: Changes in appetite or weight, fatigue or low energy, sleep disturbances (insomnia or oversleeping), or unexplained aches and pains.
- Behavioral Symptoms: Withdrawal from social activities, decreased motivation, or neglect of responsibilities at work, school, or at home.
Depression can also co-occur with other mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, ADHD, or substance use. Without support, symptoms can become more severe, but with the right treatment, individuals can lead fulfilling lives.
