EVALUATIONS

Disability and Guardianship

Comprehensive Evaluations at Behavior Therapy Associates

When questions arise regarding an individual’s ability to make independent decisions related to health, finances, education, or daily living, a comprehensive disability or guardianship evaluation may be necessary. Behavior Therapy Associates offers professional evaluations in New Jersey to help families, attorneys, and courts comprehend an individual's functional abilities and support requirements.

These evaluations are designed to provide objective clinical information that may be required in legal or court-related proceedings involving guardianship, capacity, or disability determination.

When a Disability or Guardianship Evaluation May Be Needed

A disability or guardianship evaluation may be appropriate when there are concerns about:

  • Decision-making capacity
  • Independent living skills
  • Cognitive functioning
  • Developmental disabilities
  • Significant mental health conditions
  • Safety or vulnerability concerns
  • Transition planning into adulthood

Families often pursue guardianship evaluations when an individual with developmental and/or intellectual challenges approaches adulthood (or is an adult) and continued decision-making support may be needed. Evaluations may also be requested in adult cases involving injury, neurocognitive changes, or long-standing psychiatric conditions.

What the Evaluation May Include

At Behavior Therapy Associates, each evaluation is individualized based on the referral question and legal requirements. The process may include:

  • Clinical interview
  • Interview with family members, caretakers, and other stakeholders
  • Developmental and medical history review
  • Cognitive and psychological testing
  • Assessment of adaptive and daily living skills
  • Review of developmental, educational, vocational, and medical records
  • Collaboration with relevant providers when appropriate

Testing procedures are selected carefully to ensure findings are clinically sound, clearly documented, and appropriate for legal review.

Written Reports and Documentation

Following completion of the evaluation, Behavior Therapy Associates provides a comprehensive written report. This report outlines current functioning, diagnostic impressions when appropriate, and professional opinions related to functioning levels and support needs.

Reports are prepared with clarity and professionalism, recognizing that they may be submitted to attorneys, courts, or other agencies. A feedback session is provided to review findings and answer questions.
