Functional Behavior Assessments
Overview
Functional behavior assessments at Behavior Therapy Associates assist in determining the factors contributing to behaviors that may be impacting one’s everyday functioning, social development, educational performance, work performance, and/or other areas of functioning. When individuals demonstrate behaviors that disrupt learning or create challenges in school or other environments, a Functional Behavior Assessment can provide valuable insight into what is driving those behaviors.
When a Functional Behavior Assessment May Be Needed
A Functional Behavior Assessment may be recommended when one’s behavior interferes with their ability to learn, participate in school, work, daily living skills, or extracurricular activities, or interact appropriately with others. Schools, families, professionals, residential facilities, and other stakeholders may request an assessment when behaviors become persistent, disruptive, or difficult to manage through typical strategies.
Developing successful interventions requires an understanding of the reasons behind a behavior. Rather than focusing only on stopping a behavior, the assessment process focuses on identifying the factors contributing to the behavior.
The Assessment Process
At Behavior Therapy Associates, Functional Behavior Assessments involve a structured and multi-step evaluation process. The first step is identifying and clearly defining the specific behavior(s) of concern. The behavior must be described in observable and measurable terms so that it can be accurately assessed.
Clinicians gather information using several methods. This may include reviewing the student’s developmental, family, educational, social, behavioral, and medical history and collecting input from parents/guardians, teachers, private professionals, employers, and other stakeholders. Information is gathered across situations and settings to understand how the behavior appears in different environments.
Direct observation is an important part of the assessment process. The evaluator observes the individual in situations where the behavior typically occurs in order to examine patterns and triggers. Data is collected on what happens before the behavior occurs (antecedents), the behavior itself, and what happens afterward (consequences). In some cases, additional analysis may be conducted to better understand how environmental factors influence the behavior.
Results and Behavior Intervention Planning
After the assessment is completed, clinicians at Behavior Therapy Associates analyze the information collected to determine the function(s) of the behavior. This allows for the development of more effective and individualized intervention strategies.
A detailed report is prepared that summarizes the assessment procedures, findings, and recommendations. Based on the results, a Behavior Intervention Plan may be developed to support positive behavioral change. This plan typically focuses on teaching appropriate skills, adjusting environmental factors that may contribute to the behavior, and reinforcing positive replacement behaviors that serve the same purpose as the original behavior.
