EVALUATIONS
Independent Educational Evaluations
Overview
At Behavior Therapy Associates, Independent Educational Evaluations provide a comprehensive and objective assessment of an individual’s learning, cognitive, and adaptive functioning. Licensed psychologists perform these assessments to gain a deeper understanding of an individual's abilities and areas of need while making recommendations that support services, accommodations, and educational preparation.
Independent evaluations are often requested when families, schools, or other professionals need additional information to better understand a student’s educational needs. By gathering information from multiple sources, clinicians at Behavior Therapy Associates develop a clear picture of how an individual is functioning educationally, including academically, cognitively, socially, behaviorally, motor skills, and daily living skills. This information can help guide educational support and assist with important decisions related to services and programming.
When an Evaluation May Be Needed
Independent educational evaluations may be helpful when there are questions about a student’s learning profile, developmental history, or eligibility for services. In some cases, an independent evaluation is requested to provide a more comprehensive understanding of a student’s needs beyond school-based assessments.
Evaluations may also be required when individuals are applying for services through programs such as the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). These programs help persons with developmental or intellectual disabilities who are 21 years of age or older live as independently as possible. To qualify, individuals must demonstrate a developmental disability that began before age 22, is lifelong, and significantly affects several areas of daily functioning.
When people apply for programs like SSA Disability Income or supplementary security income, where proof of their functional limitations may be necessary, independent assessments can also provide useful documentation.
The Evaluation Process
At Behavior Therapy Associates, independent educational evaluations typically include an in-depth understanding of the individual’s educational program, progress, strengths, and needs. This commonly includes an extended school observation, detailed record review, interviews with family members and school personnel, interviews with private professionals, and an interview with the individual if appropriate.
The evaluation may also include in-office testing conducted one-to-one with a licensed psychologist, depending on the specific case. Standardized assessments may examine intellectual functioning, academic achievement, and adaptive behavior. Clinicians also review relevant records such as previous evaluations, school reports, or medical documentation to ensure a thorough understanding of the individual’s functioning.
Results and Recommendations
After the evaluation is completed, clinicians at Behavior Therapy Associates prepare a detailed written report summarizing the results and providing recommendations. When evaluations are conducted for eligibility purposes, the report may also include a professional opinion regarding whether the individual meets the required criteria for services.
The goal of the evaluation process is to provide clear information and practical guidance that helps individuals, families, and professionals make informed decisions about services and supports.
